Find Happiness On Your Mat

“We don't stop being divine when we have a bad day.” - Author unknown

There are a multitude of yoga poses and sequences that will assist in opening the heart; calming the mind; and releasing both endorphins and the "feel-good" hormone oxytocin into the body, creating happy emotions that can lay the groundwork for not only a wonderful day, but also long-term well-being.

Having a bad day? Your yoga mat is a great place to connect with your inner joy and divinity! Find a quiet, peaceful place in your home, light a candle or two, put on your favourite music, and roll out your mat. Take a moment to pause and set an intention for your practice. And then come onto your mat, and sit in Sukasana (easy pose). Begin with deep inhalations and exhalations through the nose, being mindful of your breath and inhaling only positive energy as you expel any negative energy on exhalation. Then come into standing, and prepare yourself mentally for a few sets of Surya Namaskar, always remembering to let your heart be your guide.

Surya Namaskar (sun salutation), or a salute to the sun, is a continuous series of eight related yoga postures, some done twice, in what amounts to a total of thirteen poses. It is designed to warm up your whole body and integrate it with the mind and breath. A warm-up or toning exercise, and one that is considered the best of all yoga exercises, the sun salutation stretches, compresses, arches, and reinforces all the major muscles of the body, as well as the digestive and respiratory organs. It also helps you to develop flexibility, strength, balance, concentration, and focus while promoting happiness. The sun salutation is a great way for you to synchronize your breath and can be practised twice a day.

Finish your practice in Shavasana, and enjoy the benefits of deep relaxation. Take this state of bliss with you throughout your day.

There are contraindications to all yoga poses. If you are new to yoga, practice under a licensed practitioner, and always consult a physician before beginning any type of practice.

Namaste.
