Some of the most well-known designers showcased lingerie-inspired clothing on this year’s spring/summer runway. FORTNIGHT owner, creator, and designer Christina Remenyi has always had a fascination with creating and making lingerie for women. “I know it sounds predictable,” she says, “but I have always wanted to do something with lingerie. I have always been so fascinated by all its possibilities.” As I meet Christina at her chic flat in downtown Toronto, I am amazed that someone so young is designing lingerie for women of all age groups and sizes. She understands why lingerie is important: “Currently our collection consists of bras in sizes 30-38 A-E and knickers in sizes S-XL.” As I slowly sift through some of the pieces that Christina has nicely put on display for me, I come to the realization that she is not only designing lingerie because she loves lingerie, but also because she possesses a full understanding of a woman’s body.

There is nothing simplistic about her collection—FORTNIGHT is slowly reintroducing glamour into undergarments. In returning to a 1940s elegance, Christina has worked to create designs that epitomize those that Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, Grace Kelly, and Dorothy Dandridge would wear. “That [idea] was definitely part of my inspiration for this collection. I wanted to give customers a little throwback to the days of old glamour, when your undergarments were thought of as highly as any other layer of clothing.”

With lingerie exerting a large influence on the collections of many designers this season, FORTNIGHT has smartly debuted this line at just the right moment. Sexiness has always played a key part in fashion, but everyone perceives it in a unique way. “People have always found something intriguing about lingerie—and good undergarments will always help you look and feel your best,” Remenyi states. I pass by a mirror and find myself questioning my current choice of undergarment. Has lingerie always played an important role?

FORTNIGHT prides itself on custom fittings and custom-made undergarments, such as bras that help you both look and feel your best. The black Rita soft cup is a favorite piece. “The bra features a wider band that provides the support of underwires while not actually having any,” she explains. “It goes great under everything.” With FORTNIGHT’s forthcoming expansion into sleepwear for its winter collection, this is not your average lingerie company. Christina has clearly taken the responsibility of educating women on the importance of a good bra and proper fitting seriously.

A woman’s journey in life includes a flirtation with lingerie—and if lingerie brings some sort of self-fulfillment, sexiness, or happiness along the way, then you should be investing in it. “What good is your $200 top if you don’t look good underneath it?” Remenyi points out, as I exit her flat with a FORTNIGHT piece in hand. Lingerie has definitely never looked, or felt, better.
